“ So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”

Colossians 2:6-7

Some people think it’s not OK to have a boyfriend/girlfriend when you’re young and Christian.  Is this OK?

YES and NO!

Basically, what are your motives?

As a Christian, no matter how young you are, you must see that it is ‘possible’ for you to marry this person otherwise there is absolutely NO reason to go out with them.  You don’t need to go out with someone so you can decide whether you like blondes or brunettes or so you can show to others that you are normal or attractive or wanted or mature or exciting.  Much pain can be avoided and much sexual temptation sidestepped by not going out just because you’re trying to figure out who you are or trying to look good in front of others.

I, Farquhar, went out with someone for the exact reasons above and it’s one of the silliest and most hurtful things I’ve ever done.  I was brought to my senses by a Christian simply asking me, “why are you going out with her if you can’t possibly see her as your future wife?”  Suddenly I knew my motives were all wrong.

As Christians we must remember that God has a plan for our lives and if you do not have the gift of singleness for life that means he has someone for you to become one with in marriage.  If you truly believe that then you won’t feel the need to rush into lots of relationships to try and find yourself or feel fulfilled, you will be able to prepare yourself for the one God has for you.
